The global economy is in good shape in mid-2018, with growth expected to pick up to 3.4%—the highest rate since 2010—and labor markets that continue to tighten as unemployment decreases. Despite the positive outlook, significant geopolitical and policy risks exist, including potential trade wars between the US and its key partners, volatility on the Korean peninsula, the ongoing Brexit process, and potential unexpected rises in inflation and interest rates.
Increasing women’s participation in the labor force has wide-ranging economic benefits, and most developed countries have made significant strides in boosting women’s participation in the 21st century—with one notable exception. The United States has lost ground in labor force participation among all prime-age workers in recent years: men’s labor force participation fell by more than three percentage points and women’s participation dropped by more than two percentage points since 2000.
